The NCAA Weekly|16 June

1. After a closed-door Junior World Championships Trial competition, here is your U.S. team, who will compete at the Junior World Championships, which will be held in Győr, Hungary on 27-30 June: Skye Blakely (56.500), Kayla Di Cello (55.750) and Sydney Barros (54.550). Konnor McClain is the travelling alternate (54.150). Kayla Di Cello is committed to Florida for 2022-23 and Sydney Barros to UCLA for 2023-24. Here are all the results from the Trials. A special congratulations to Ciena Alipio for scoring a huge 14.400 on beam!

2. Videos from the National Team training camp are elusive, but we have one: you can watch here eMjae Frazier, UCLA’s Margzetta Frazier’s younger sister, nailing a FTY on vault.

3. Former UCLA assistant coach Randy Lane posted on Instagram a heartbreaking account of his state of mind in the past few months. The statement is rather cryptic but he talks of being ‘angry, sad, disappointed, unappreciated, used, manipulated and unworthy’. This is of course only one side of the story but in the aftermath of Miss Val’s retirement, it seemed pretty clear that something was not quite as it should have been among the UCLA staff. Mr Lane writes that he is recovering and that he will soon have an important announcement to make. I hope that he will find his passion for gymnastics back on a team that can truly appreciate him.

4. There has been a lot of mysterious whispering surrounding Alyona Shchennikova‘s college commitment lately. A few days ago Alyona’s Instagram page seemed to confirm the rumour that she had switched her commitment from Michigan to LSU, as her profile included the caption: ‘LSU 💜’. Since the speculation began, Alyona has deleted the information, but it now seems likely that in 2020 she will join the Tigers in Baton Rouge. Her love for purple leotards and purple hair really fits the LSU ambiance! Also, congratulations to Alyona, who graduated from high school this week!

5. Oklahoma’s Jade Degouveia, who is entering her senior year, posted a video of herself training bars – and she looks awesome! The Sooners often thrive in their senior year, I hope this will be the case for Jade as well!

6. UCLA commit Jordan Chiles (2020-21) switched gyms and is now training at the World Champions Center alongside Simone Biles. Jordan wrote on Twitter: ‘Start of something new…”Once upon a time you were a little girl with big dreams that you promised you’d make real one day. Don’t disappoint yourself.”‘ I hope that her Olympic dream will come true and that then she will join the Bruins and have a blast of a career!

7. Congratulations to UCLA alumna Katelyn Ohashi, who both graduated this week and was named one of the ten Glamour 2019 College Women of the Year!

8. Speaking of Katelyn Ohashi, she and Miss Val were guests on Good Morning America. Watch the interview here.

9. Utah alumna Kari Lee is starring on a new Mountain America Credit Union TV advertisement. Watch a segment of it here.

10. UCLA commit Sara Ulias (2020-21) showed off in training the highest double-front dismount off bars you will ever see. So impressive!
