The NCAA Weekly|23 December

1. Arizona State looked excellent at their Maroon and Gold intrasquad – highlights here! Among the best performances, Katelyn Lentz stuck her FTY on vault (9.800) and sophomore Cairo Leonard-Baker showed off a beautiful bars routine (9.875). The Sun Devil, however, shone particularly on balance beam, where five scores were 9.825 or better. Senior Justine Callis posted the highest score of the day on beam, a 9.875, with this routine.

2. Ohio State showed off some very good gymnastics at their Scarlet and Gray intrasquad – highlights here! Sophomore Morgan Lowe scored the highest on vault, sophomore Jenna Swartzentruber impressed on bars, redshirt junior Amanda Huang shone on beam and senior Jamie Stone was the best gymnast on floor – here is Jamie’s floor routine.

3. Denver looked impressive, strong and polished during their Crimson and Gold intrasquad – recap here! Among the highlights, here is sophomore Lynnzee Brown‘s Yurchenko 1.5 on vault. This week, senior Grace Broadhurst and her teammates also starred in a video where they showed fans an average behind-the-scene training day – enjoy!

4. At their intrasquad, Utah State showed off some good gymnastics. On vault, sophomore Leighton Varnadore and senior Madi Ward-Sessions scored two 9.700s. On bars (highlights here), Madi Ward-Sessions topped the rotation with a good 9.850. On beam (highlights here), the best score was posted by sophomore Taylor Dittmar – a 9.825. And on floor (highlights here), Leighton Varnadore impressed with a 9.850.

5. Pitt also showed off some solid gymnastics at their intrasquad. Among the highlights, junior Deven Herbine competed a very straight Yurchenko half twist on vault; on bars, senior Lucy Brett impressed with this outstanding routine; on beam, sophomore Haley Brechwald was solid and senior Brittany West made an excellent comeback after missing out last season due to injury. Finally, on floor, the Panthers impressed with some original choreography and difficult tumbling passes: junior Alecia Petrikis showed off a sassy choreography, senior Olivia Miller a fun routine and sophomore Sophie Bochenek a brand-new full-in.

6. At other pre-season meets, Washington looked good at their Purple and Gold intrasquad – highlights here. Illinois State also looked strong on all four pieces. Here is the vault rotation, the uneven bars rotation, the balance beam rotation and the floor exercise rotation, which includes some excellent choreographies! Finally, Penn State competed at their Blue-White intrasquad, and showed off some very promising gymnastics – highlights here. Among the best performances, here is sophomore Lauren Bridgens on bars, and here is a segment of junior Tess McCracken‘s floor routine.

7. A few teams posted videos formally introducing their freshmen. Utah introduced their four freshmen: Cammy Hall, Hunter Dula, Adrienne Randall and Cristal Isa, as well as sophomore Lauren Wong, who joined the Utes last January. Southern Utah introduced five of their seven freshmen: Mayson Bentley, Emma Wissman, Karley McClainShylen Murakami and Stephanie Tervort. Auburn introduced five of their six freshmen: Molly Frack, Derrian Gobourne, Reid SchaeferMia Schlarbaum and Sabrina Cheney. Iowa State introduced their five freshmen: Madelyn Langkamp, Natalie Horowitz, Grace Woolfolk, Kelsey Boychuk and  Makayla Maxwell. The latest freshman Pitt introduced is Caitlyn Kline. Eastern Michigan introduced three of their six freshmen: Brooke Hylek, Kara Roberts and Charlotte Reynolds. And Florida also began to introduce three of their six freshmen: Leah ClapperSydney Johnson-Scharpf and Savannah Schoenherr. Sophomore Nicole Webb, on the contrary, is not listed on the Gators’ roster anymore.

8. UCLA junior Felicia Hano was a guest on Crosstown Stories, a programme on the Pac-12 NetworkShe and the Bruins were interviewed not only about Felicia’s career at UCLA, but also about how Fish coped with the consequences of the severe burns her father sustained in a training explosion while working as corporal for the Downey Police. Felicia wrote on Twitter: ‘[S]o thankful for the Downey Police Dept. and all the support they’ve shown to my dad and to me throughout my gymnastics career 💙’.

9. LSU commit Olivia Dunne showed off some very intricate connection work on bars on Twitter, with the caption ‘connections are 🔑’ – gorgeous!

10. Michigan State alumna and survivor Lindsey Lemke announced her engagement to her boyfriend DJ Hull on Twitter – congratulations!!!

Commits of the week: Katelyn Rosen to UCLA (2023-24), Victoria Henry to Ball State (2020-21) and Brooke Donabedian to Temple (2020-21).
