Meet the 2019 Alabama Freshman Class

Alabama is welcoming an insanely talented freshman class: Asia Dewalt of AIM Athletics; Emily Ganskins of Cincinnati Gymnastics; Jensie Givens of South Coast Gymnastics; Griffin James of Gymstrada Gymnastics School; and Shallon Olsen of Omega Sports Centre.


Name: Asia Dewalt

Club: AIM Athletics – Texans Gymnastics

Best event(s): Vault and bars

Asia Dewalt is a two-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2016 and 2018). In 2016, she tied for fifth place on bars, and in 2018, she tied for fifth place on vault. Asia had an excellent 2018 season. She tied for gold on vault and for bronze on bars at the Texas Championships, and won gold in the all around and silver on vault at the Region 3 Championships.


Name: Emily Gaskins

Club: Cincinnati Gymnastics

Best event(s): All around

Emily Gaskins is a former U.S. elite gymnast. In 2015, as a junior, she won bronze on vault at the P&G Championships. In 2017, as a senior, she won bronze on floor at the U.S. Classic, and was fourth on floor at the P&G Championships. Emily competed in three international competitions. She competed at the International Mexican Cup in 2013 and at the Jesolo Trophy in 2014 as a junior, and at the 2016 Jesolo Trophy as a senior.


Name: Jensie Givens

Club: South Coast Gymnastics

Best event(s): Bars

Jensie Givens is a bars and beam specialist. She was third on bars at the 2017 Region 1 Championships and ninth on beam at the 2018 SoCal State Championships. Also in 2018, she was first on bars at the SCEGA California Classic, second on bars at the Cactus Cooler meet, and third on bars and beam at the Lady Luck Invitational.


Name: Griffin James

Club: Gymstrada Gymnastics School

Best event(s): Vault and floor

Griffin James is a four-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017). In 2013, she tied for seventh place on bars in the Junior A division. In 2014, she tied for third on vault, and was seventh in the all around also in the Junior A division. In 2015, she was third on vault in the Junior C division. And in 2017, she was fourth on vault and tied for eighth on floor in the Senior B division. In 2018, she had a stellar Virginia State Championships, where she was crowned all around, bars and beam champion, and won bronze on vault.


Name: Shallon Olsen

Club: Omega Sports Centre (Canada)

Best event(s): Vault and floor

Shallon Olsen is a Canadian elite gymnast and 2016 Olympic finalist on vault. In 2018, she competed internationally at the International Gymnix Challenge, where she won the vault title, and at the Commonwealth Games, where she won gold with the team and on vault, and bronze on floor. She is also the current Canadian national champion on vault and floor. In 2017, she competed at the Montreal World Championships, where she finished seventh in the vault final, after rumours that she may debut a triple twisting Yurchenko. In 2016 Shallon became the first ever Canadian gymnast to compete an Amanar vault.
