Meet the 2019 Georgia Freshman Class

Georgia is welcoming a very numerous and very talented freshman class: Alexa Al-Hameed of Triad Gymnastics; Sterling Austin of Georgia Elite; Rachel Baumann of WOGA; Samantha Davis of North Stars Gymnastics Academy; Rachael Lukacs of North Stars Gymnastics Academy; Mikayla Magee of Pearland Elite; Alyssa Perez-Lugones of Georgia Gymnastics Academy; Megan Roberts of East York Gymnastics (Canada); and Abbey Ward of Orlando Metro Gymnastics.

 

Name: Alexa Al-Hameed

Club: Triad Gymnastics

Best event(s): Beam

Alexa Al-Hameed is a three-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2014, 2015 and 2018). In 2014, she was third on bars in the Junior A division. In 2015, she was fourth on bars. And in 2018, she was fifth on beam. In 2018, she also won bronze on beam at the Region 4 Championships. Back in 2015 she competed at the Nastia Liukin Cup, where she was first on bars and third in the all around. Alexa was originally committed to Oklahoma.

Name: Sterlyn Austin

Club: Georgia Elite

Best event(s): Vault and floor

Sterlyn Austin qualified to the 2018 Junior Olympics, where she tied for twelfth place in the Senior E division. Earlier in the season, she won silver on floor at the Georgia State Championships, and gold on floor and bronze on vault at the Region 8 Championships.

Name: Rachel Baumann

Club: WOGA

Best event(s): Vault and beam

Rachel Baumann, the sister of Florida’s Alyssa Baumann, is a three-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2014, 2016 and 2017). In 2014, she tied for tenth on beam in the Junior A division. In 2016, she tied for gold in the all around, and won silver medals on vault and beam in the Junior E division. In 2017, she won the beam title and was second in the all around in the Senior B division. Rachel competed as an elite junior gymnast in 2015 and competed at the P&G Championships. She is joining Georgia one year early.

Name: Samantha Davis

Club: North Stars Gymnastics Academy

Best event(s): Vault and floor

Samantha Davis is a two-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2016 and 2017). In 2016, she won the floor title in the Junior F division, and in 2017 she was fourth in the all around in the Senior B division. She had a stellar 2017 season leading up to J.O.s. She took second on bars and beam and third on vault at the New Jersey State Championships, and gold on all events but bars at the Region 7 Championships. Samantha briefly competed as an elite gymnast between 2013 and 2014.

Name: Rachael Lukacs

Club: North Stars Gymnastics Academy

Best event(s): Vault and floor

Rachael Lukacs is one of the best Level 10 gymnasts in the country and one of the very few to compete a double-twisting Yurchenko on vault. She is an eight-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2011 to 2018) and won at least one medal at most competitions. In 2013, she tied for third on beam in the Junior A division. In 2014, she won gold on vault and in the all around in the Junior B division. In 2015, she defended both of her titles, which included a huge 9.900 on vault in the Junior C division. In 2016, she regained the vault and all around crowns, and added a gold also on floor and a silver medal on beam in the Senior A. Finally, in 2018, she won gold on vault and floor, and silver on beam in the Senior F division. Rachael competed multiple times at the Nastia Liukin Cup, and won gold in the all around in 2016 and silver in 2017.

Name: Mikayla Magee

Club: Pearland Elite

Best event(s): Beam

Mikayla Magee is a four-time Junior Olympic qualifier (2014 to 2017). In 2014, she was sixth in the all around. In 2015, she tied for sixth place on floor. In 2016, she tied for twelfth on beam. And in 2017, she tied for bronze on beam. Mikayla competed at the Nastia Liukin Cup in 2017.

Name: Alyssa Perez-Lugones

Club: Georgia Gymnastics Academy Inc.

Best event(s): Vault and bars

Alyssa Perez-Lugones had a successful Level 10 club career. In 2017, she won gold on vault, silver on floor and bronze in the all around at the Georgia State Championships. In 2018, she won silver on bars and in the all around, and bronze on vault and beam at the State Championships, and was fourth on vault and bars at the Region 8 Championships.

Name: Megan Roberts

Club: East York Gymnastics (Canada)

Best event(s): Floor

Megan Roberts is a Canadian elite gymnast. As a junior, she won bronze on floor at the 2015 Jesolo Trophy, and silver on vault and floor at the International Gymnix Cup that same year. As a senior, she was second in the all around and third on floor at the 2016 Elite Canada, and second on floor at the 2017 Gymnix Cup.

Name: Abbey Ward

Club: Orlando Metro Gymnastics

Best event(s): Vault and bars

Abbey Ward qualified to the Junior Olympics in 2017 and finished twenty-first on bars in the Senior B division. In 2018, she won silver medals on vault and bars at the Florida State Championships, and finished sixth on vault at the Region 8 Championships.
