The United States’ number one junior gymnast, Maile O’Keefe of Salcianu Gymnastics, has verbally committed to the University of Utah.
O’Keefe, 15, visited the Red Rocks’ campus in June, and afterwards she wrote on Instagram: ‘Future Utah Ute! I am so very excited to announce my commitment to being a Ute!! The University of Utah is a great fit for me. I love the coaches, their commitment to the athletes and all that being a member of this University entails. I would not be where I am without the love & support of my coaches, Sorin & Tammy Salcianu, for their belief of my capabilities. Also, I send my love out to my family & teammates for their love & encouragement to be me.’
O’Keefe belongs to the class of 2024, and should therefore start university in 2020, and compete her first NCAA season in 2021.
Maile O’Keefe is a two-time U.S. junior all around champion (2016 and 2017). At the U.S. national P&G championships in 2017, in addition to her all around gold medal, she also won gold on bars and silver on beam, floor and vault. She has recently competed at the junior Japan Cup, where she won gold in the all around and on balance beam, and silver on the uneven bars, on vault and on floor exercise. She is turning senior in 2018, and aims to compete at the World championships (2018 and 2019) and at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, before moving to college.
